Montecristo Montecristo No. 5 Review:
Gauge 40 and only 102mm length. One of Montecristo smallest cigars, but anyway good thickness. This cigar has all the virtues of the Cuban brand, being a real aperitif, like a Dry Martini if we were talking about drinks.

Review #65: AUG 07 Bought a box in Veradaro in April (AGO07 code) and have managed to smoke 10 or so from it so far. Excellent construction with a range of wrapper colors that extended to almost maduro dark for 2 of the 25. Only 1 out of that 10 has been a less than perfect draw. The offender was a bit tight, nearly plugged but it relaxed in the last half. Excellent cigar for those spots in your day where you have a half hour to spend with a smoke. Pre-light was subtle and leathery. First third I found peppery and a bit harsh for my taste. Passing the halfway mark evened things out a bit and I found it to be very pleasant with nutty and coffee flavors abounding. An excellent example of the MC flavor. The last third packed a punch and the nicotine rush was substantial, more than I expected from such a small stick. All in all, I see myself replacing this box with more MC #5's. Review #64:  This cigar is a perfect draw every time. It is sharp and spicy from the first draw and mellows out toward the middle and finishes up with a full, smooth earthy cacao tone. The only problem is you don't feel quite ready to let it go when it is finished all too soon. Perfect for a luchtime smoke goes very well with dark chocolate and espresso. Review #63: The Monte #5 is one of my faithfuls. This is enormous power in a compact package. The leather-like, thick wrapper makes it clear from the start that this little fella is really a brute. Although you'll find coffee and a generous touch of cocoa, in my experience the no. 5 is typified by the rich earthy flavour and aroma. It is prevalent in many Montecristo cigars, but here it takes the foreground and flows over the tongue in an almost overpowering way. This cigar is somewhat one-dimensional in that there's little evolution, but that one dimension is packed with so much great taste that you won't mind.
Often this little format is left in the shadow of the famous Montecristo no. 2, or the ever popular no. 4. And while those cigars are grand when they're spot-on, my experiences with them have been variable. This perla, however, has never let me down.
Make no mistake, this one is powerful. It is rich, strong and the inexperienced smoker could get quite a nicotine whallop from it. My personal preference goes out to something that delivers its flavour to the fullest. Some may find this lacking in subtlety, some may find it not varied enough, but for me this is the perfect flavour. When I smoke it, I forget about all those fancy cigars that promise so much, and realise this is where my happiness as a smoker lies. I have never smoked limited editions, or a Cohiba, but I've tried plenty of cigars. None, however, left me as fulfilled as this.
Construction has always proved to be great, a perfect draw, and every time that wonderful flavour that reminds me why I really smoke cigars. If you haven't tried a no. 5 yet, forget about the big sticks for a moment. Lay aside the no. 2, put the EL's back in the humidor, and light one of these. It might not be your piece of cake, but when it is, what a cake you'll have. This will soon become my humidor stuffer of choice. - Submitted by Nekotaku on January 30, 2008
Review #62: Just smoked a Monte 5, having had fantasic experience with the Cohiba perla size. I found the start harsh, then towards the middle had about 5 minutes of delight before the end finished very harsh again. Review #61: I smoked one of these with a friend last night. It was from May '07. Normally I would have waited at least a few months, but I wanted to try one.
