Montecristo Montecristo Especial No. 1 Review:

I received this cigar from a very generous brother that shares the same passion for cigars and Habanos as I, and he simply asked me to enjoy this cigar and if possible to jot down a few words about it. I have really been enjoying smaller ring Habanos due to what I feel is better flavors and complexity from them. The Especial No.1 presented a richly colored medium brown Colorado wrapper. I did not find a single flaw in it and the construction was perfect. The body of the cigar held a firmness to it and gave a slight resistance to the touch. This was a beautiful cigar from the heft, weight, look, construction, aroma, and what I was soon to experience, the flavors and complexity. The triple cap of the Laguito No.1 had a slightly bent over pig tail that looked a little worn and was probably due to shipping. It made no difference as I cut the cap it would be gone anyway. The pre-light aroma was earthy, but what really got my totally undivided attention was the draw, it was perfect, not too loose or too firm, it was the epitome of what a draw of a cigar should be. Perfect The Especial No.1 started from the very first draw with intense flavors. There was no waiting period, just vibrant, full Technicolor delicious flavor. I was greeted with flavors what tasted like old aged tobacco, not a cigar that was only about a year and a half old. Followed with a deeply rich mocha and coffee flavor that developed into a creamy toffee layer on my palate. This cigar danced around on my tasted buds and it was as graceful as a World Class Ballroom dancer could be. It developed mid-way with notes of vanilla bean which turned into a dryness that reminded me of spicy toast. The subtle sweet spiciness developed nicely into notes of gingerbread. The Especial No.1 burned straight, never needing a touch-up or correction. The ash surprised me, as it was almost totally white, which I rarely find in a Habanos. The ash held firm for 1.5 inches in between taps into the ash tray. I was really amazed with the richness of the flavor in this cigar and told myself that I needed to secure a box or two of these because they were such an exceptional well crafted, complex, flavorful cigar. This was another small ring Habanos that delivered above expectation and was over 1.5 hours of pure Habanos heaven. (Review by Tampa1257)

Review #17: Just smoked one from a 1999 box and it was awsome! from the first draw you start picking up woodiness followed by a sweet and creamy flavor with a dash of spice. The second half is pure enjoyment the sweet creamy cinnamon a leather taste takes over and as you come to the finish the hint of spiceness comes back in a "bravo" type fashion. Its a must try, The 07 crop has been great across the board and I have a box of 07's and that are great as well. - Submitted by Cuban Clouds on April 10, 2008

Review #16: I bought aged cigars from a shop in Ireland that specialises in rare aged Habanos. The shop owner recomened me a list of aged Habanos and one of the aged Habanos was this cigar it self. At this point its safe to say that, I smoked most Habanos in the market but never aged until recently . This Monte Cristo was from "98" and, WOW ! . One heck of a cigar from "98" a little rough in the beginig, but smooth and a vanilla hint to it in the middle and leathery finish . I will admit I was sad when this vintage cigar was out what a expierence. - Submitted by cmyparadise4u on March 29, 2008

Review #15: A beautiful, fairly mild cigar that has a great deal of complexity and a perfect burn and draw (although I have heard they can be very tightly rolled at times). Very slow burning with consistent undertones of coffee and chocolate throughout most of the cigar. Runner up to the Partagas Serie du connaisseur in my opinion (there were some very light vegetal flavors present but barely noticeable), but I prefer stronger cigars. Really requires 90 minutes of slow, pensive smoking to fully appreciate. - Submitted by Goldenberg on March 25, 2008

Review #14: I have smoked only one of this cigar from unknown date (probably less than 1 year). Simply perfect! Wonderful colorado wrapper, slightly oily, pre-lit smell was something that can only be found in great habanos. I had no problems with the draw and burn whatsoever, and the cigar was extremely flavourful from the start to finish, growing steadily from mild to medium-full. Very complex smoke, highly recommended. A must. I just pray that the vogue of ever-increasing ring gauges will not mean that these will be put out of production in the near future. - Submitted by titobueno76 on March 3, 2008

Review #13: Smoked 3 so far in my habano career over several years, and somehow mixed feelings. Mixed in a way that tastewise, flavour, aroma, this comes close to the best I have ever smoked. Only, my first experience a couple of years ago, was very painful and hard to overcome. Longed for it the whole glamour night, and when the moment arrived, it turned out to be absolutely plugged. No smoke to be seen, correction, my whole craving went up in smoke, and that was the only smoke I saw that night. That particular cigar itself still is the main reason why I don't take a smoke outside my house (and standby 'reanimation' tools) when I go out for a dinner or drink without trying to be almost sure the draw will not be dead-difficult. On the other hand, when they draw well, these are fenominal cigars, my last 2 experiences were solid proof for that. Absolute elegance and top performance, best of the brand!!! Somehow I don't have a box of these, but one of these months I think I'll take the plunge, because every day when I think cigars, I 'm thinking, man, why don't you have a box of these?!?! - Submitted by Yapi on February 1, 2008
