Review #7: I bought a box of these in Varadero this past Jan 2006. I finally smoked one in late March and all I can say is it was worth the wait. This is in my humble opinion the best of the EL cigars so far. I have smoked 7 different El's over the past few years and this one has it all. The draw was perfect as well. I just hope the rest in the box are as good as the first one. I will buy another box of these if there are any left on my next trip back to the Island. - Submitted by purofino on April 7, 2006
Review #6: Before writing my opinion about this new cigar from Habanos, I must clarify that the review is based on 3 cigars I have smoked (2 from the same box). The cigars are very young, not even a year old, therefore I believe their taste profile will be greatly improved in a few years time. Nevertheless, considering the limited production of those cigars and their attractive price (around 14 Euros), one has to make up his/her mind about purchasing a box for long term storage and aging.
The cigars are 50 gauge, and classified as Double Robusto or Canonazo. Almost similar in size and width are the Siglo VI and Trinidad Robusto Extra.
The wrapper is dark brown in colour, elastic, rolled evenly. The cigar has no tight spots. The prelit aroma is majestic. I would try to describe it as floral. Lighting the cigar evelny takes some effort, due to the gauge and size. The burn is smooth, even. The amounts of smoke reaching the palate are increased steadily, as does the taste, revealing a finely crafted cigar.
The first third could be described as floral, with hints of vanilla. Notes of wild mushrooms can be detected. The second third reveals the cigar's true potential. Hints of fine leather, exquisite cocoa, freshly ground green pepper, all this under the essence of dark chocolate, and the distinctive toasty Upmann flavour found in the Magnum 46. The last third is strong, with predominant tastes of musky leather, wet earth and dark, bitter chocolate.
I enjoyed smoking this new, young cigar very much. As a taste profile, I would prefer the Siglo VI. Nevertheless ill stack away a cabinet for long term aging. I am certain in 3 years from now these cigars will rise in both value and complexity. If you can get hold of them, buy a box, it seems to be a sound investment for your cava ;-) - Submitted by Dimitris in Athens - Greece on February 11, 2006
Review #5: An absolutely incredible pre-lite aroma. My eyes crossed and I was in heaven sniffing this gem. It was a little difficult to lite, had to be relit a few times but the burn was fairly even. Review #4: For such a young cigar, SXF-ABR.05, I cannot believe how well they smoke already. I couldn't resist smoking one out of the box, and I'm glad I did, as I take this to be a "preview of coming attractions", lol. Starts off with a light floral and a touch of vanilla, progresses to grassy and toast flavors, the toast being dominant. They are earthy and musky, with leather notes, and tobacco flavors already complex. The construction is outstanding, with a perfect, beautiful cap, a very dark, gorgeous wrapper, (a true EL wrapper, to me)and although the cigar was a bit soft, (youth, I'm sure) it wasn't a negative by any means. Very full flavored, and the rest of the box is tucked in a dark corner of my cabinet and maybe every 6 months or so I'll take one out. I'll post a new review in a year or so, and see how much they've improved. I would recommend this cigar to any full-flavored Habanos lover, but especially to EL collectors and lovers, as this is one of the best EL's I've smoked, young or not. In the same order in which I received this box, I also received a box of Cohiba DC EL 2003's, with 2 1/2 years on them, and the Magnum 50 held it's own with this almost gone, soon to be classic.
