Partagas 8-9-8 Sin Barnizar Review:

This cigar, discontinued in the year 2002, is probably the oldest among all Partagas, because old catalogues point out it existed before the Revolution. The main characteristics are that it is strong, with rich flavour and aroma and well balanced.

Review #9: APR 00 Turn out to be one of my favorite cigar. I got this vintage box from my cigar shop. Unlike other Partagas, this one is not very spicy. Creamy and wood test. Very beautiful wrapper. No need to re-light. This box be my keeper. - Submitted by prueks on May 28, 2009

Review #8: DEC 98 Recently I bought a half dozen of 8-9-8-unvarnished as homage to all discontinued slimmer cigars (I will miss the most Rafael Gonzalez Lonsdales). They came from December 1998 box and I didn’t expect too much from them as they were made in provincial factory on the peak of cigar boom. Surprisingly all of them were without significant burn problems and were rather consistent in construction. This one had nice veinless wrapper, great smell at cold and good draw. Ten years on the shelve made tobacco well matured but complexity was not its strong point. I didn’t get out any really interesting flavors: mostly earth and pure tobacco. I couldn’t get rid of feeling that this cigar was once harsh and bitter. This is definitely completely different cigar from bigger and famous brother from varnished box. Although I like this kind of vitolas (Cervantes, Corona Grande) I will not particularly miss this one. - Submitted by Diademo on June 4, 2008

Review #7: Had some of the last 2001s, but - a pity - was not overly impressed. When smoked a bit on the dry side, it is a bit harsh and "old style" Partagas peppery, similar to the Coronas. But when properly humidified, it is very mellow and almost boring, not representing the Partagas standards any more. Surely, it has some substance and subtlety, but does not really fit into the marca. Aromas are very decent, faint coffee, mild cedar and oak, but almost edging on cardboard. Would try it again eventually, but do not see myself searching for it... That said, I might attribute my disappointment to the very light Claro wrappers and draws on the overly loose side. - Submitted by Hercule Poirot on May 29, 2008

Review #6: I have had some from the 70's and some from the 90's. All have been real good. They are much more milder than the Varnish, and of course, a smaller vitola. It takes concentration to appreciate the subtle, yet complex tastes. Cedar, honey, and light coffee predominantly. Too bad these are d/c'ed. - Submitted by planetbetter on November 4, 2007

Review #5: smoked one from a 2000 box, perfekt burn very good aromas. Can confirm chocolate taste from reviewer no.4 , very nice - Submitted by bolibeli on March 28, 2007
